But after independence - on 15 January 1949 - the Army got its first Indian Chief, hence Army Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year. On this day KM Kariyappa was chosen as the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army and from the same day on 15 January every year, Army Day is celebrated.

 

How does India celebrate Army Day?

 

The army's command headquarters in the country celebrates this day by organizing military parades, performing various routines such as aerial stunts and bike pyramids. The main parade is held at the Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi, on this day gallantry awards and army medals are also distributed. The country also pays tribute to the army at 'Amar Jawan Jyoti' at India Gate.

 

Who was Field Marshal Cariappa?

 

Kondadera "Keeper" Madappa Kariyappa was the first Post-Independence Commander-in-Chief of India. He led India on the Western Front during the India-Pakistan War of 1947. He is one of the two recipients of the title of Field Marshal of India, the other being Sam Manekshaw.

 

Kariyappa was a resident of Karnataka and his career lasted for three decades. He was one of the first two Indians to be selected for training at Imperial Defense College, Camberley, UK. Before taking over as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Cariappa served as Commander of the Eastern and Western Command of the Indian Army.
