Buddha Purnima is also an auspicious day for Hindus and is celebrated with full devotion and dedication throughout the country. In India, this day is declared as a gazetted holiday in many states. In the northern regions of the country, Lord Buddha is considered to be the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Buddha Purnima is scheduled to take place on May 21 in 2021.

This day is celebrated with equal love and affection for Gautama Buddha of great faith. Not only this but the festival of Buddha Purnima is also celebrated in neighbouring countries Nepal and Sri Lanka.

 

Rituals during Buddha Purnima

 

On the day of Buddha Purnima, followers of the Buddhist sect visit the temples of Gautama Buddha. They spend their time listening to the sermons given by the monks there. Some devout Buddhists spend their days in various temples reciting ancient verses.

On this day special events are organized in the temples of Lord Buddha. Many cultural, religious and social events are hosted in these temples. People from far and wide attend these events describing the life history of Gautama Buddha.

Some of the temples display statues of Gautama Buddha which reflect their earlier years. The idols are placed in basins filled with water and decorated with fresh flowers. Tourists visiting the temple pour water on the idols as part of the ritual. The ceremony symbolizes a new and pure beginning.

During Vesak, Buddhist devotees pay special attention to the teachings of Lord Buddha. His five principles are called 'Panchsheel'. On this day, some people also wear white clothes and eat pure vegetarian food.

Donation is also an integral part of the Buddha Purnima ceremony. People donate food, clothes, money or any other useful items to the poor and needy. After the preaching of Lord Buddha, cages or tied animals are freed to display love and affection towards all living beings.

The day of Buddha Purnima is very important for the followers of Buddhism, in India as well as abroad. Gautama Buddha was a very famous spiritual leader who led a simple and struggling life, leading all worldly pleasures. He preached the principles of equality and love for all living beings. Lord Buddha is considered the founder of Buddhism. On this chosen day, people remember the teachings of this great saint. His teachings are used to end sufferings and sorrows in life.
