Dadu Dayal Jayanti

In every culture and society, there were people who taught humanity and the real meaning of life throughout life. One of such people was Saint Dadu Dayal who taught the real essence of life to human beings through his songs and encouraged people to understand what life really means. His words were very simple but his meaning was very great. To this day his teachings are influential among people for their intrinsic life and understanding of the real self. In 2021, the birth anniversary of Sant Dadu Dayal will be celebrated on 23 March.

Life and work of Dadu Dayalji

Born in Gujarat in the 15th century, Dadu Dayal later shifted to Rajasthan. Throughout his life he taught human beings the purpose and meaning of existence. His concept was very close to Sufi ideas where human beings are given utmost importance. Even though he was brought up in a Hindu family, he did not believe in idol worship. An example of his ideas can be found with other great saints of Kabir's time. For him, music was a way to communicate to the common people in an effective way. That is why he composed more than 5000 songs, which carry the soul of his teaching till date.

The essence of his teaching

In his poems, he used various patterns to get people to understand his vision. Dadu Dayal means kind brother in the local language. His younger brother who played an important role in spreading his teachings. Later it was known as ‘Dayal Panth’ or sect who followed the teachings of Dayalji with his life. His view was above the small limits of caste and religion.

Importance of Dadu Dayal Jayanti in present day

With time, the teachings of Saint Dadu Dayal were not forgotten by the common people. There are still people in the state of Rajasthan and Gujarat who follow the way of life taught by Daduji. At a time when society is grappling with a serious problem of violence, communalism and casteism, the secular views of Dadu Dayalji Maharaj remain largely applicable. When a Muslim emperor like Akbar was a follower of this Hindu thinker, it is indeed believed to be the truth of his preaching. This is why Dadu Dayal Jayanti is still celebrated every year. This proves the relevance of his ideas.
