Guru is the one who has given you any type of education whether it is the knowledge of the book and the way of life should be lived. In Hinduism, a Guru is considered equal to God. The Mahakumbh of knowledge is considered to be the Guru. There shall be darkness if there is no Guru and ignorance all around. The Guru leads people from positivity to negativity. Due to this importance Guru is considered equivalent to God. It is said that a Guru is like a lamp which burns itself and illuminates the society, country or the world.
It is said that in the holy scriptures if both Guru and God present together then, one must put their head at the feet of Guru first because by the grace of Guru only a man is able to see God. The Vedas, Puranas, Upanishad, Saints, poets, sages have all spoken about the glory of Guru.
The famous story behind the festival of Guru Purnima. Maharishi Ved Vyas is considered to be the greatest Guru in the history who composed many kinds of literature such as the Mahabharata, Brahma sutras, 18 Purana, Shrimadbhagwat Geeta which has its relevance today as well. Maharishi Ved Vyas was born on the day of Purnima in the month of Aashad. This is the reason that the Purnima of the month is celebrated as the Guru Purnima. Ved Vyas Ji the son of sage Maha Sagar had the knowledge of three periods. His divine vision was very good. At the same time, he had accurately predicted the Kalyug. Ved Vyas divided the Vedas into two parts which are Rig-Veda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda because he saw the future that no one would be able to fully study the Vedas in the Kalyug itself. In such a situation Ved Vyas Ji divided it into four parts to keep the religion alive in the hearts of the people.
The Vedas were so difficult to study that he composed The Puranas in the form of the fifth Veda in which knowledge is presented in the form of stories. Maharishi Vyas gave his knowledge to his disciples so that he could further expand the knowledge. Therefore on this day, a man should worship His Guru as a part and form of Maharishi Vyas.
