He fought with Muhammad Ghaznavi of Ghazni in the 1019 invasion. In the battle, Vidyadhar showed his might and fought with Mohammed but no result of the war was achieved. After which Mohammad had to return. In 1022, Mohammed once again challenged King Vidyadhar to battle. He attacked the fort of Kalinjar but failed in all his plans and King Vidyadhar conquered Muhammad. In the joy of victory, the powerful ruler Vidyadhar built the Kandariya Mahadev Temple and dedicated the temple to Lord Shiva.
