Magha Mauni Amavasya, also known as ‘Maun Amavasya’, is a day celebrated on Amavasya during the Magh month of the Hindu calendar. It falls in the month of January-February according to the Gregorian calendar. Mauni Amavasya is also known as 'Maghi Amavasya' as it is celebrated in the month of Magha. The word ‘mouni’ or ‘silence’ signifies silence, so on this day, most Hindus observe complete silence.

The upcoming Mouni Amavasya is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 11 February 2021.

Another important ritual associated with this day is known as Mauni Amavasya Snan. This practice of taking holy baths is very popular during Kumbh Mela and Magh Mela.

Mauni Amavasya which is a dedicated day for spiritual practice. It is very popular especially in northern India. The celebration of this festival is very special in Allahabad in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. During the Kumbh Mela in Prayag (Allahabad), Mouni Amavasya is the most important day to bathe in the holy Ganga river and is popularly known as the 'Kumbh Parva' or 'Amrit Yoga' day. In Andhra Pradesh, Mauni Amavasya is celebrated as 'Cholangi Amavasya' and is also known as 'Daras Amavasya' in other regions of India. Mauni Amavasya is the day of the attainment of knowledge, happiness and wealth.
 

Ritual during Mauni Amavasya:

Devotees wake up early on the day of Mauni Amavasya to take a holy dip in the Ganges at sunrise. If a person cannot go on a pilgrimage on this day, then he should add some Ganges 'water to the bathwater. It is believed that one should remain calm while bathing. On this day devotees worship Lord Brahma and recite 'Gayatri Mantra'.

After finishing the bathing ritual, the devotees sit down for meditation. Which helps to focus and achieve inner peace. On the day of Mauni Amavasya, any wrongdoing should be avoided.
 

Some devotees observe silence on the day of Mauni Amavasya. They avoid speaking throughout the day. This practice is known as 'silent vow'. If a person cannot keep a silent fast, then he should remain silent for the whole day, till the worship rituals are completed.

On the day of Mauni Amavasya, thousands of Hindu devotees along with Kalpavasis take a holy dip at the Sangam in Prayag and spend the rest of the day in meditation.

In Hinduism, the day of Mauni Amavasya is also suitable for getting relief from Pitra dosha. People offer tarpan to get the blessings of their ancestors or ancestors. On this day people provide food to dogs, crows, cows and poor peoples.

Donating is another important ritual. On this day people donate food, clothes and other essential things to the poor and needy people. There is also the ritual of offering sesame and oil to Shani Dev.
