Magha Purnima is an important day for Hindus which falls on 'Purnima' in the month of 'Magha' in the traditional Hindu calendar. This date falls in the months of January – February in the Gregorian calendar. Magha Purnima is also known as 'Maghi Purnima' or 'Maha Maghi' and is the last and most important day of Magh month. In Hindu mythology, the full moon is considered an important day for religious and spiritual rituals, and of these, Magha Purnima is the most auspicious.

On this day, thousands of Hindu devotees take a bath at the Triveni Sangam in Prayag. During this time the famous 'Kumbh Mela' and 'Magha Mela' are also held, in which devotees come from every corner of the country. Even in the southern states of India like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm and gaiety. Float festival is organized on this day in Tamil Nadu, in which beautifully decorated idols of Meenakshi and Lord Sundeshwara are mounted on the tableaux. Magha Purnima also holds special significance for the followers of Buddhism as it is believed that Gautama Buddha assumed his impending death on the same day.

Magha Purnima 2021 in 2021 is scheduled to be on Saturday, February 27.
 

Ritual during Magha Purnima

On the day of Magha Purnima, devotees should wake up early and take a holy bath by the river or in any way before sunrise. Those who cannot take a dip in the river can take a bath at home by mixing Ganga water in water.

After the bath, the devotees start preparing for the puja. On this day they worship Lord Vishnu and Hanuman Ji. Along with the Ishta Devta, Magha Purnima day is also dedicated to worshipping Goddess Parvati and Lord Brihaspati (as Jupiter is the deity of Magha Nakshatra).

Devotees worship Satyanarayana with full devotion and also recite the Satyanarayana Katha. The idol worship is done with banana leaves, sandalwood paste, sesame, betel nut, Molli and fruits. In most of the temples of Lord Vishnu across India, special arrangements for this puja are made. So people also go to temples in the evening.

Fasting on Magh Purnima is also considered fruitful. People who observe this fast and eat only after offering 'Arghya' to the moon in the evening.

Donating in the form of clothes, food, cereals, ghee, jaggery and fruits has been considered highly beneficial. This donation should be done for the Brahmins and the needy is considered very auspicious. In Hindu scriptures, donating sesame throughout the month of Magha is considered very auspicious.
