Makar Sankranti or Maghi is a festival according to the Hindu calendar which is dedicated to the Sun God. This day is celebrated every year in the Krishna Paksha of Maggi which falls in the month of January as per the Georgian calendar. This festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated not only in India but also in Nepal Pakistan Sind and Bangladesh. But let me tell you that this festival is celebrated mainly in India and Nepal. This day is celebrated with great Joy by flying kites across the country.
 

When is Makar Sankranti celebrated?

Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the Magh month of the Hindu calendar which falls on the 14th or 15th of January every year. Like a voice in 2022, this festival is scheduled to be celebrated on Thursday, 14 January.

Throughout India Makar Sankranti is celebrated by various names and rituals associated with this holy day. Other names include Khichri in Uttar Pradesh, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bhogali Bihu in Assam, Sankranti in Central India and Lohri in Punjab and Northern India.


The Rituals of Makar Sankranti-

There are different rituals observed in different parts of India some of the major rituals of the Makar Sankranti festival is given below-

The people of Uttar Pradesh take a holy bath in the river Ganga. The famous Magh Mela begins on this day in Prayag in Allahabad.

In Punjab, the native people burn Bonfire on the eve of Sankranti and perform Puja around the sacred fire by throwing rice and sweets into it. After this a grand feast is organized around the fire And also they do their famous Bhangra dance near the Fire.

In Gujarat, kite flying is of great importance on this day. The younger members of the family are given gifts on this day. In Maharashtra, on the day of Sankranti, a variety of sweets are made from Jaggery and sea season. On this day all the people greet each other and the married women of the house with utensils.

In Tamilnadu and other parts of Southern India, this day symbolizes the worship of the god of the harvest. The natives on this day harvest their paddy and share sweets made with rice cooked in milk with ghee. Which festival is known as Pongal and this is the most important and big festival in southern India.

The famous Ganga Sagar fair of Bengal starts on this day. This is situated in the Delta regions of gangs where the river merges into the Bay of Bengal. On this day people take a dip in the river and offer prayers to the sun, God, in the morning.

Makar Sankranti is a symbol of the new year among the tribals of Odisha.
