Meen Sankranti

The beginning of the twelfth month in the Hindu calendar coincides with Pisces Sankranti. It is the last month of the year and on this day the Sun enters the Pisces zodiac. This day is also known as Meen Shankaranam in Southern India. Like all other Sankranti festivals, donating material and receiving blessings on this day is considered auspicious. This day is celebrated in different ways according to the culture and it is said that donating land on this day is considered very important.

It is said that the sixteen Ghats that come after Sankranti are considered auspicious ghats. Many types of holy chanting and worship are performed in families to free themselves from the sins of the past. Bathing in the holy waters of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati is considered auspicious. Sankranti means the beginning of a new month according to all other Hindu cultures except Bengali and hence it is believed that good works should be done from that day onwards.

In 2021, Meen Sankranti is scheduled to fall on Sunday, March 14.

Ritual on the day of Pisces solstice

On all the twelve solstices including the Pisces solstice, devotees should take a holy bath according to the Muhurta.

While bathing, one should salute the Sun God and pray for his welfare. This should be done preferably at sunrise.

This day is celebrated in various ways so as to achieve happiness and prosperous life for your family.

At home and temples are decorated with flowers and incense sticks, lamps and sweets are offered to the Lord.

Donations are made to Brahmins and the needy including food donations (grain donation), money donation and Vistara donation (clothing donation). Donating land to the devotee on this special day is especially beneficial.

On this day, the Sun God is worshiped all over India, such as at the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa. Devotees worship and pray to God and hope for peace in the society. The purpose of Sankranti Puja is to remove all sins and to start the new month positively without any burden. Thus, this festival of Pisces Sankranti in 2021 will be celebrated on Sunday i.e. March 14, in which donating land is considered very beneficial.
