This temple of Mata Meenakshi is considered one of the most sacred places. According to Hindu mythology, Maa Parvati was born as the daughter of Pandey king Malayadhwaja. After which Lord Shankar appeared to marry Maa Parvati and he married Meenakshi form of Maa Parvati.


Legend of Meenakshi Temple
It is said that once King Malayadhwaja of Tamil Nadu did austerities to please Maa Parvati and Maa Parvati appeared to him in delight. After which the king asked for a boon from Maa Parvati that he wanted her as his daughter, then Parvati, happy with austerity, incarnated as a daughter in the king's house. The king named him Meenakshi and Meenakshi took over the rule of the city when he grew up. After this, Lord Shankar came to Earth in the form of Sundareswarar and he proposed to Meenakshi Devi and got married. Lord Vishnu himself took over the conduct of the marriage of Lord Shankar Mata Parvati but due to some reason, Vishnu was delayed in coming. Someone else got Meenakshi married. After which Lord Vishnu got angry and vowed never to come to Madurai. Then Goddess Parvati and Lord Shankar, together with the gods, convinced Lord Vishnu.
It is said that this divine couple ruled the city for a long time. In this way both the marriage of Shiva-Parvati and the pacification of Lord Vishnu are celebrated as the biggest festival in Madurai which is called Chitirai Thiruvizha i.e. Marriage of God.

Meenakshi Temple Structure

This temple is considered to be 3500 years old and its walls are around 1500-2000 years old. The entire temple building is very grand which is built on 45 acres of land. The main temple of the temple was built in a grand manner. The temple has a length of 254 meters and a width of 237 meters. However the present Meenakshi temple was built in the 17th century. The temple has statues of Lakshmi on 8 pillars. There is also a holy lake in the premises of the temple which is 165 feet long and 120 feet wide.

The Shiva temple is located in the middle of the group. The Nataraja mudra of Shiva is also installed in this temple. Also, there is a Ganesh temple in the temple which is called Mukurunay Vinayagar. The idol of Lord Ganesha is said to have come out during the excavation of the lake.

Popular festivals of Meenakshi Temple
The Meenakshi temple is as grand as the festivals are celebrated here. Here Navaratri and Shivaratri are celebrated with great pomp. Shobha and Pad Yatra are organized in the temple and there is a very festive atmosphere throughout Tamil Nadu. The main Tyahore of this temple is Meenakshi Tirukalyanam which is celebrated in the month of Chaitra.
