Mythology

The essence of Nirjala Ekadashi or Bhishmasen Ekadashi’s story of the pass is associated with the Pandava’s of the Mahabharata. According to the story, Bhima’s brother along with his mother used to ask him to observe the fast but Bhim is like the fire called Vrikka which only becomes quiet after eating food due to which he was very upset. He could complete all the rules and methods of fasting but cannot remain hungry. One day the powerful Bima told his situation and pain of unable to observe the fast to the Maharishi Ved Vyas. After listening to Bima, Ved Vyas Ji told Bhim that if you believe in Heaven and Hell then every Ekadashi has to be observed by staying away from food. But it was impossible for him to stay a without food so he wanted to know if there is fast that comes only once in a year. After listening to the agony of Bhima’s hunger Maharishi says that there is an Ekadashi fast told by God himself which comes once in the year and by doing it, you shall attain a place in the heaven. Then he told Bhim about the Nirjala Ekadashi fast that falls on the Jyestha month. In this fast, you have to remain hungry and thirsty only once in a year and as a result you will attain heavenly Abode. The Maharishi set that the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jester month between vriksham and Mithun is called the Nirjala Ekadashi. In this fast, both food as well as water is prohibited. Water is completely prohibited other than using it during baking or worshipping. On this day the fast is kept from the early morning of Ekadashi till the sunrise of Dwadashi. You can consume water or food only after worshipping on Dwadashi.
