History of Omkareshwar Temple
It is said about the history of the temple that King Mandhata, on the banks of river Narmada, did austerities on Omkar Parvat to make Lord Shiva happy. The king had done such hard penance that Lord Shiva had to come to see the king. Shiva appeared and asked the king to ask for a boon, then King Mandhata asked Lord Shiva to boon that he should be seated on the banks of Narmada. Since then the famous Omkareshwar Mahadev appeared and became the most famous pilgrimage place.
Kubera's severe austerity
Shiva devotee Kubera is believed to have done penance in the Omkareshwar Mahadev temple. Shivalinga was established there for penance. The gods, happy with the worship of Shiva, made Kubera the god of wealth. Kubera made Shiva happy with his hard penance and Lord Shiva created the river Kaveri with the hair of his jata to bathe Kubera. This river flows from near the Kubera temple and joins Narmada ji. Devotees also come here in large numbers to visit Kubera Ji.
