Papamochani Ekadashi

Papamochani Ekadashi falls on the Krishna Paksha (Ekadashi day) in the month of 'Chaitra' according to the North Indian calendar. However, this Ekadashi is celebrated in the Hindu month 'Phalgun' in the South Indian calendar. In the English calendar, it falls in the months of March to April. Papamochani Ekadashi is the last Ekadashi of 24 Ekadashi in the Hindu calendar. This Holika falls between the festivities of Dahan and Chaitra Navratri. In the year 2021, it is going to fall on Wednesday, April 07.

When Papamochani Ekadashi falls on Thursday, it holds special significance and is known as 'Guruvar Ekadashi'. In Hindu, the word 'sin' means 'misdeed' or 'sin' and 'redemption' means 'giving up' and hence this Ekadashi gives freedom from all sins. Apart from this, observing this Ekadashi also motivates the person to stop committing sins. Therefore, devotees consider fasting on Papamochani Ekadashi as very auspicious. Thus, in 2021, Papamochani Ekadashi is scheduled to fall on Wednesday, April 07.

Ritual during Papamochani Ekadashi

Devotees wake up on Ekadashi at sunrise and take a holy bath with Kush and Til. Most followers of Vishnu fast on this day to seek the blessings of the infinite mercy of their deity.

Fasting on Papamochani Ekadashi is considered very auspicious. It is best to fast without eating anything or just drinking water. While this is not possible for everyone, fasting can also occur by eating non-cereal foods, milk, nuts and fruits. The fast is broken the next day after worshipping Lord Vishnu.

Those who are not fasting should also not eat lentils, rice and non-vegetarian food on the day of Ekadashi. One should recite 'Shri Vishnu Sahasranama' on Papamochani Ekadashi.

On this day, it is worshipped by devotees with full dedication to Lord Vishnu. Devotees offer basil leaves, flowers, fruits, lamps and incense sticks to Lord Vishnu. Offering mogra or jasmine flowers is considered very good.

If possible, the observer of this fast should visit the temples of Lord Vishnu in the evening. Special programs are organized in temples such as reciting important chapters of the Holy Bhagavad Gita.

Importance of Papamochani Ekadashi

The importance of Papamochani Ekadashi is described in 'Bhavyaottara Purana' and 'Harivamshara'. It was first narrated to King Mandhata by sage Lomasa and then by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira, the eldest king among the Pandavas. It is believed that Papamochani Ekadashi destroys all sins and frees the observer from guilt. By keeping this Ekadashi with full devotion, the person is never affected by demons or ghosts. Following Papamochani Ekadashi is more beneficial than going to Hindu pilgrimage sites or even donating a thousand cows. The main purpose of observing the Papamochani fast is to control the demands of one's body and to chant and recite the Vedic mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
