Purnima is one of the significant days of Hindus which falls on the full moon day in the month of according to the Hindu calendar. This is also known as Shakambhari Jayanti. Thousands of devotees take a holy bath in the rivers of Ganga and Yamuna on this day. According to the Georgian calendar, Pausha Purnima is celebrated in the month of December - January. In 2021 the Pausha Purnima is scheduled to fall on Thursday, January 28.

On the occasion of Pausha Purnima the Hindu devotees from faraway places come to take a bath in the holy rivers of Prayag Sangam (rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati) it is believed that by taking a holy dip in these rivers, you will get rid of all your sins, even from your past life. Apart from Prayag, the other major places of pilgrimage are Nasik Allahabad and Ujjain.

All over India Pausha Purnima is celebrated with great enthusiasm and energy and on this day special rituals are held in Hindu temples in different parts of the country. In some places, the Pausha Purnima is also celebrated as ‘Sambakhari Jayanti ‘and on this day goddess is worshipped with utmost dedication. The nine-day long Shambakhari Navratri festival also ends with the day of Pausha Purnima. In Chhattisgarh, people celebrate the 'Charta' festival on this day.

The rituals carried out during Pausha Purnima-

It is the most important ritual to take a bath on Pausha Purnima. Devotees get up early and take a bath in the holy rivers during the sunrise. These devotees perform 'arghya ' and some other religious practices to the rising Sun.

After the bath, the devotees worship the Shiva Linga with water and spend their time in meditation.


On this date what has also observed the fast of Lord Satyanarayana and worship Lord Vishnu with their full devotion and dedication. Apart from this on this day devotees also decide the story of Satyanarayana and special offerings are prepared to offer God. After the Prasad is being offered to God, it is distributed among all the devotees and after which an aarti performed. The special’ Pushya Abhishek Yatra’ is carried out in the temples of Lord Krishna all over India on this day. The lectures on Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita are also organized on this day.


It is also considered very auspicious to do some Charity on this day. It is believed that you will easily get fruition by the donations made by you on this day. Apart from this free food is served to the needy and poor in temples and ashrams on this day.
