Many tales behind celebrating this day as Maha Shivratri but the most authentic story is that Lord Shiva was approached by many Gods around the world urging him to save them from the poison that was going to destroy the vast ocean. It is said that Lord Shiva himself swallowed the dangerous poison in order to save other gods and Goddesses and saved them all with the help of a snake in his throat. After this incident, all the Gods and Goddesses paid respect to Lord Shiva for protecting them. Thus it is believed that whosoever observes a fast on this day and remembers Lord Shiva with great dedication and Faith he is likely to bless them with the good life and good health by himself. However, according to some mythological stories, it is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva and Parvati were married and that is the reason why this day is celebrated.
On this day usually, the devotees consume only nuts and milk and do not eat anything else. At night Lord Shiva is worshipped in nearest temples around the world in which a special ritual of 'Rudrabhishek' is performed where people Bade Lord Shiva with milk and offer sweets and pray.
According to some spiritual experts, it is considered very auspicious to meditate on this day and chant’ Om Namah Shivay’ as much as possible throughout the day.
