The monthly Shivaratri fast is considered to be a very powerful and auspicious fast that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The greatness of this fast is found in all the major Hindu Puranas. Skanda Purana provides all the details and other information especially for observance of the Shivaratri fast. There are four main Shivaratri mentioned in Skanda Purana. Nitya Shivaratri is the first day that is celebrated daily, that is, every night. The next month is called Shivaratri and Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha is celebrated every month. Then Magh Shivaratri falls on the third day. It begins with the first Teethi and ends on Chaturdashi night when Lord Shiva is worshipped throughout the night. The fourth Shivaratri is the main one and is called Maha Shivaratri. It is celebrated on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha. Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in a grand manner in major parts of the country. You can see the monthly Shivaratri dates in 2021 below:

On the day of Shivaratri fast, devotees who observe the fast should wake up early in the morning, and meditate on Lord Shiva in the morning and evening. They bathe and wear new and clean clothes. Wearing Rudraksha Mala and wearing Vibhuti is considered an important part of the ritual.
The observer of the monthly Shivaratri fast should visit the Lord Shiva temple and perform the Shiva Linga ritual with water, milk, honey and other auspicious substances. While bathing the linga, the devotees apologize for their sins and pray for their blessings.
After the holy bath, haladi and kumkum are applied to the Shiva linga, and a pink and white lotus garland is offered to the Lord. The installation of incense sticks and ringing of bells in the temple is also a part of the ceremony.
Throughout the day, bhajans and aartis are performed. It should be noted that unlike other fasts, in which the fast is broken after the Puja is performed, devotees should fast during the day as well as at night during the Shivaratri fast.
The devotees of this fast recite hymns chanting Om Namah Shivaaya Mantra throughout the night.
On this day, special offerings are made to Lord Shiva in the form of fruits. Devotees spend their time listening to the stories and legends of Lord Shiva with devotional songs and hymns. Shivaratri fast is broken the next day by distributing prasad with other disciples of Lord Shiva.
