Vaishakh Poornima

The full moon that falls in the Vaishakh month of the Hindu calendar is called Vaishakh Poornima. According to the Gregorian calendar, it falls in May. This year, Vaishakh Purnima is going to be held on 26th May. Purnima is very important in the life of people, so people keep fast on this day.

It is said that the full moon has a great impact on a person's mind and therefore it is suggested that on this day one should creatively exploit the immense energy given by the full moon. Buddhists and Hindus consider this day to be very auspicious for prayer, meditation, fasting and other spiritual practices.

This day marks the end of the month 'Vaishakh Sanatan'. Hindus believe that bathing in a holy river like Ganges, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, and Tungabhadra in this month removes a person's sins and also provides salvation to the ancestors. Various festivals are celebrated on Vaisakh Purnima and the most famous is 'Kurma Jayanti'.

Kurma Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Kurma, an avatar of Lord Vishnu in the form of a turtle. According to legends, the 'Mandaranchal Parvat', a huge mountain, was used by the gods and asuras to 'churn the ocean'. But halfway through the process, the mountain started sinking into the water. Lord Vishnu quickly took the form of a turtle and lifted the mountain on his back. All this happened on the day of Vaishakh Purnima and due to this, Kurma Jayanti is also celebrated.

Lord Vishnu is worshiped with great devotion on this day. Fasting is kept one night in advance and prayers are offered to God for the whole night. On Kurma Jayanti, people worship in Vishnu temples and generously donate alms. Many devotees visit the Sri Kurmanath Swamy Temple in Andhra Pradesh, where the festivities take place grandly.

Thus, this day has great religious significance and is considered very auspicious for the beginning of any construction work.

On this day, Narasimha appeared as his fourth avatar to save Lord Vishnu from his devotee, Prahlada, the demon Hiranyakashipu. Because Narasimha appeared in the evening, God is worshiped on this day from sunset. Devotees worship God and Goddess Lakshmi, keep a fast, and especially donate sesame, clothes and food to the poor.
