Step 1- before Varuthini Ekadashi you must consume satvik food on the Dashmi.
Step 2- you must follow complete celibacy during the fast.

Step 4- you must stay awake during the night and on the next day feed the brahmins and the needy people.

- do not lie and be angry at anyone.

Once upon a time when the king was doing penance in the forest he was attacked by a bear and the Bear bit his leg. The bear dragged the king into the dense forest. The king I was observing the Varuthini fast so in spite of so many problems he did not get angry and continue to pray to Lord Vishnu. Hearing the prayers of his devotees Lord Vishnu himself appeared there and killed the bear and liberated the king. The king's leg was badly injured by this attack which made him very sad. Lord Vishnu told him the way to get rid of this mystery. He asked him to go to Mathura and worship is Varaha Avatar. The king did the same and he once again became the king with a beautiful body.
