Matsya Jayanti which is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Matsya. It is believed that it is believed to be the first incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a fish during the Satyuga. According to Hindu mythology, 'Matsya Avatar' is a horned fish that appeared during the 'Mahapralaya'. In the Hindu calendar, Matsya Jayanti is celebrated on the 'Tritiya' in the month of 'Chaitra' during 'Shukla Paksha'. The festival falls between the auspicious Chaitra Navratri and coincides with the grand Gangaur festival. Matsya Jayanti is an important day for Hindu devotees. Nagalapuram Veda Narayana Swamy Temple, close to Tirupati, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, is the only temple in India dedicated to the Matsya avatar of Lord Vishnu. If we talk about Matsya Jayanti in the year 2021, Matsya Jayanti will be celebrated on Thursday, April 15, in which devotees will worship Lord Vishnu.

 

Rituals during Matsya Jayanti:

 

On the day of Matsya Jayanti, devotees keep a fast to please Lord Vishnu. The fast on Matsya Jayanti starts from last night and the followers of this fast also avoid eating anything or even drinking water. The fast is kept till the sunrise of the next day and the devotees break their fast only after worshiping Lord Vishnu. It is believed that waking up all night on the day of Matsya Jayanti and chanting Vedic mantras gives special fruit. Reciting 'Matsya Purana' and 'Vishnu Sahasranama' is also considered very auspicious. Donating on the day of Matsya Jayanti is highly beneficial. On this day, devotees should donate food, clothing or money to the Brahmins and distribute it to the poor and needy. They benefit greatly by doing so.

 

Importance of Matsya Jayanti:

 

According to Hindu legends, Matsya avatar was one of the ten incarnations of Shri Hari Vishnu, 'Dashavatara'. 'Matsya Avatar' is a horned fish that appeared during 'Mahapralaya'. And he had saved the universe from the demon named Damanaka. In the religious history of Hinduism, there is no mention of rituals, traditions and customs to worship the Matsya avatar. Yet on the day of Matsya Jayanti, Hindu devotees worship this form of Vishnu with devotion and dedication. This festival is celebrated in a grand manner in the temples of Lord Vishnu across the country. Vaishnavas and ISKCON celebrate the festival very elaborately in temples.
