Sankashti Chaturthi or Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the fourth day of every month of the Hindu calendar on the Krishna Paksha. Also, when Sankashti Chaturthi falls on Tuesday, it is popular as Angarki Chaturthi and is considered the most auspicious of all Sankashti Chaturthi days. In 2021, Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi is going to be on January 2, Saturday and January 31 on Sunday in the month of January. On this day, the devotees remember Ganesha by observing a vow.

 

Sankashti Chaturthi celebrations are prevalent in the northern and southern states of India. The festivities are celebrated in Maharashtra in an even more grand manner. The word Sankashti is originally a Sanskrit word and means 'deliverance during difficult times' while 'Chaturthi' means 'fourth day or day of Lord Ganesha'. Therefore on this day devotees worship Lord Ganesha to help them overcome all the obstacles of life and overcome in every difficult situation.

 

Rituals of Sankashti Chaturthi:

 

On Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees wake up early in the morning and worship Lord Ganesha. They perform a difficult fast in honor of their deity. Some people also keep a partial fast. Those observing this fast consume only fruits and vegetables.

Sankashti Puja is performed in the evening after the moon sighting. The idol of Lord Ganesha is decorated with Durva grass and fresh flowers. The lamp is also lit during this time. Other common worship rituals such as burning incense and reciting Vedic mantras are also performed. After this, devotees read 'Vrat Katha'. The fast is broken only after worshiping Lord Ganesha in the evening and seeing the moon.

 

Modak and other favorite food is offered to Lord Ganesha. This is followed by 'Aarti' and later Prasad is distributed among all the devotees.

 

On the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, special worship rituals of the Moon or Chandra Dev are also performed. In this, water, sandalwood paste, cooked rice and flowers are offered in the direction of the moon.

 

Importance of Sankashti Chaturthi:

 

It is considered beneficial to see the moon on the holy day of Sankashti Chaturthi. Devotees of Lord Ganesha believe that by praying them, especially on the day of Angarki Chaturthi, all their wishes are fulfilled and they live a prosperous life. The childless couple also observe Sankashti Chaturthi fast for getting children.

 

As Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated on Krishna Paksha, Lord Ganesha is worshiped with different peeta and naam in each month. There are a total of 13 Vrats, each fasting has a specific purpose and story, which is known as 'Vrat Katha'. So there are 13 fasting stories in total. In this way, devotees pray to Lord Ganesha and pray for happiness and peace in life.
