History of temple
The temple of Mahabodhi was constructed during the 1st to 2nd century AD. The structure of this temple resembles the stupa established by Emperor Ashoka. The great emperor Ashoka traveled to Bodh Gaya in Bihar around 260 BC and built a small temple near the Bodhi tree. This was the same Bodhi tree where Gautama Buddha used to sit. It is believed that the location of the temple built by the emperor was changed.
Mahabodhi Temple Structure
The temple is made of bricks. Which is 160 feet high. The area of ​​the temple is spread over an area of ​​4.8 hectares. The average height of the main temple wall is 11 meters and it is constructed in the classical style of Indian architecture. The temple is built in the shape of a seven-storey pyramid. Which is very beautiful and designer. UNESCO was included in the World Heritage Site in 2002, seeing its amazing beauty. Presently the temple is the property of the Government of Bihar.
Grand statue of gautam buddha
There is a grand statue of Gautam Buddha in the temple. The idol is in the posture of Padmasana. People come from abroad to see this idol. Behind the main temple is a 7 feet tall statue of red sandstone of Buddha. This idol is in Vijarasana posture. Amazing beauty is seen all around the idol. It is believed that Emperor Ashoka installed a throne made of diamonds at this place in the third century. Which was called the navel center of the earth.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Gaya to reach the Mahabodhi Temple. Indin operates weekly flights from Gaya to Calcutta and Bangkok.
 
Rail route - The nearest railway station is Gaya Junction. From Gaya Junction to the temple one can be reached by taxi and auto rickshaw.
 
By Road - Buses are available from different places to Bodh Gaya. Bodh Gaya can be reached by bus from Gaya, Patna, Rajgir, Varanasi and Calcutta.
